Unsurprisingly, the Eastern brethren have awoken to some confusion. Below represents their reaction. Can any of my canonist friends help them make sense of the situation? Prima facie, it would appear that there needs to be a primer on what communion and Excommunication is, even for Vatican officials??

Eastern Orthodox: The SSPX can’t receive communion in the Catholic Church?

Oriental Orthodox: I just saw. What is the charge?

Assyrian Orthodox: They won’t accept the 2nd Vatican Council

Eastern Orthodox: Weird. We don’t accept 14 of their Councils.

Oriental Orthodox: we don’t accept 18

Assyrian Orthodox: we don’t accept 19

Eastern Orthodox: And yet… we are all invited to drink from the chalice in any Catholic Church without us changing any of our beliefs.

Oriental Orthodox: says who?

Assyrian Orthodox: says Vatican 2

Eastern Orthodox: wait a second… the very council the SSPX reject allows we who are in schism to receive communion, and yet now they are disallowed from receiving communion?

Oriental Orthodox: strange, right ?

Assyrian Orthodox: I think it’s because they presume all Eastern Christians who reject the Pope and his authority as in culpable. They say the kids and grandkids of the original schism are not responsible.

Eastern Orthodox: pffft! Half my congregation are ex-Catholics who knew the papacy like the back of their hand. Jay Dyer showed them all the documents.

Oriental Orthodox: and yet they, too, per canon 844, can just drink from the Catholic chalice?

Assyrian Orthodox: well, if they invite all other EO who reject the Pope to receive, what could reasonably stand in the way? If that’s right, there doesn’t seem to be any hindrance to that per canon 844.3.

Eastern Orthodox: jay dyer can receive communion? Yikes!

Oriental Orthodox: i am 100% certain that if Patriarch Bartholomew and Pope Twadros II ask to receive communion from Pope Leo XIV, the latter would give.

Assyrian Orthodox: so we are all more Catholic than the SSPX are?

Oriental Orthodox: I suppose the math adds up . But really, it doesnt add up because this crazy confusion is precisely what the SSPX are upset about.

Anglican: I don’t know what you are all about, but the Catholic chaplain here at St Jude’s Hospital gives me communion every day. Rome has exchanged her brains for a big heart, as it should be.
